My health journey began my freshman year of high school after watching the documentary Food Inc. If you haven’t seen this film I HIGHLY recommend you do, but I’m sure that those of you who have can most likely vouch why my life could never be the same after those credits finishing rolling up the screen. I immediately became obsessed with nutrition after seeing the film, plunging myself into any and every health article I could get my hands on and completely rethinking everything I thought I knew about food, exercise and the way food and ingredients are produced. It took me some time to sift through ridiculous “Lose 30 Pounds in 12 Days!” crash diet ploys and correct my false assumptions, like recognizing that not all things containing chia seeds and “whole grains” are healthy. My health journey is still in its growing stages and I learn new things about ingredients, diet and exercise every day. But I can confirm this: there is no one-size-fits-all nutrition plan we are all meant to follow identically. The trick to ultimate health wellness is to listen and understand the way your own body interprets and reacts to the foods it places in its mouth, and to make a plan off of your own lifestyle and the things your body needs.
Being healthy doesn’t mean conforming to a specific, fancy diet or denying yourself your favorite junk foods for certain amounts of time. Healthiness isn’t a destination, it’s a way of life. Want to feel powerful and energized when your eyes blink in their first rays of sunshine? Long to see your favorite jeans hug your hips just right like the way they used to in your early 20’s? Aim to play catch with your great-great grandchildren without having to be hooked to an oxygen tank? You shouldn’t only desire all of these things, you demand them! Everyone has the obligation and right to treat themselves well, inside and out, and what better way to do so than to give your body the nutrients it needs and craves on a daily basis? You’ve only got one body to live in, and I promise the moment you begin to take care of it is the moment it will begin to take care of you! It will not happen overnight. You will want to quit and pick up that big juicy burger or skip a run to play hooky on your couch, and that’s ok. This is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. So put on your shoes, grab a banana, wrap a big smile around your face and get out that door! The world is a beautiful place, and you more than deserve to live in it the best way you can.
